- Check the languages. Japanese and English are already selected on this page, so you can skip straight to translating.
- Translate and copy. The tool reads the Japanese text and shows the English translation, ready to copy.

What makes Japanese text tricky to translate from photos
Image translation works in two stages: text recognition (OCR) reads the characters, then machine translation turns them into English. Most mistakes happen in the first stage, and the Japanese writing system has some features that make that stage harder:
- Three scripts at once. Japanese mixes kanji, hiragana and katakana in the same sentence, often with Latin letters and numbers too.
- Vertical text. Signs, books and manga are often written top to bottom, right to left. Crop to a single column or speech bubble for the best result.
- No spaces between words. The translator has to work out where words begin and end, so a clean photo makes a big difference.
- Tiny furigana. Small reading guides above kanji can confuse OCR. Photograph close enough that the main characters are large and sharp.
- Stylised fonts. Brush lettering on restaurant signs and bold display fonts on packaging are harder to read than plain printed text.
Tips for more accurate Japanese translations
- Hold the phone parallel to the text and avoid steep angles.
- Use even light and avoid glare on glossy menus, packaging and screens.
- Crop to only the text you need, so logos and background patterns are not read as characters.
- Use the original screenshot instead of a photo of a screen whenever you can.

Accuracy, privacy and limits
Text recognition is powered by the open-source Tesseract OCR engine and runs in your browser; only the recognised text is sent for translation. Printed text in a clear photo gives the best results. Handwriting, stylised fonts and low-quality images reduce accuracy. Machine translation is ideal for understanding what something says, but legal, medical and official documents should always be checked by a qualified human translator. Our comparison of AI image translators, OCR and manual translation explains when each approach makes sense.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Japanese to English image translator free?
Yes. You can upload images and translate Japanese text to English for free, without creating an account.
Can it read vertical Japanese text?
Yes, but accuracy is best when the image contains one block of text. For vertical text, crop to a single column or bubble and keep the photo upright.
Does it translate kanji correctly?
Common kanji on printed signs and packaging are recognised well. Rare characters, handwriting and artistic fonts are where mistakes happen.
Can I translate a whole manga page at once?
You can, but results are cleaner if you translate one panel or speech bubble at a time, because the reading order of a full page is complex.
Can I translate into a language other than English?
Yes. Change the target language in the tool to translate Japanese text into any of the other supported languages.
